‘The Phantom of the Opera’ has become one of the most important musicals in history. But also has been an inspiration in music in general. Many rock bands have realised covers of songs from the show. It’s amazing that rock bands, with a completely different music style, enjoy the songs of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, so they make covers. This means that the songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber are original, amazing and versatile.
On Youtube you can find thousand of covers, but I will show you only three for now:
- Lindsey Stirling
She is an American violinist, dancer and composer. She became popular in ‘American Got Talent’, but she has been working a lot on Youtube, updating songs and videos where she performs her songs, and she has released two albums.
This cover of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ is one of the bests for me. It’s like a kind of medley with lots of songs from the show. You can hear ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, ‘The Music of the Night’, ‘Little Lotte…/The Mirror…’ and ‘Think of Me’. Lindsey is just amazing, the way she performs and she plays the violin and dances. The cover is beautiful, with some rock style and the violin makes it much better and unique.
Nightwish is a metal band from Findland. They started to perform music in 1996 and they still playing concerts and new music. They play metal and rock but they have a soprano singer, who has been changing many times in the band history. Floor Jansen is the one who is playing with the band right now.
In the video, the singer is Tarja Turunen, who left the band in 2005. It’s a version in concert of the main theme of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’. It’s a kind of music I’m not used to listen but I like this cover. I think that the singer is very good, as Christine Daaé, and the metal style sounds pretty good in this song.
- Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes is an American punk rock band. In 1999 they released the album ‘Are a Drag’, with lots of covers from musicals. There is ‘Tomorrow’ from ‘Annie’, ‘My Favourite Things’ from ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’ from ‘Evita’…
I specially love this cover. My brother likes punk and rock, so he used to listen to ‘Me First and the Gimme Gimmes’. One day he discovered this album so he showed it to me. So this cover reminds me of him. The songs are shorter than the original and they sound good, honestly. It’s an album that I recommend to musical lovers, because you can have a different point of view of musicals and see what other musicians can do with the songs you like.
Which one is your favourite? Did you know any of them before?
