Who is behind the mask of the Phantom? Of course I know it’s Michael Crawford, Ramin Karimloo, Brad Little, Gerard Butler or Gerónimo Rauch, but you know what I mean. It’s a beautiful character, full of mystery and drama. Sure that’s what makes the show so successful.
Behind the mask it’s a man with a deformation on his face. In the original book, by Gaston Leroux, Erik explains that he was born with that deformity, and he was shown in freak shows. Poor thing.
But is much more than that. The mystery is more interesting. You are not sure of what’s hiding behind that mask. It’s a man full of passion and love for music. He is the lyric, the notes, the melody. He falls in love and gets obsessed with the voice, the soprano, Christine Daaé.
Is a person you can love, even when he sometimes looks evil and full of anger and jalousie. Because you understand his story, his point of view, you see how sad is his life even being so talented.
How do you feel about the Phantom and his mask?
