‘Mary Magdalene’, about 1535-40, Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo, National Gallery
All my life I thought that she was a prostitute rescued by Jesus, that’s why she decided to follow him and stay by his side. But apparently is difficult to know. She appears several times in the Bible, but is more known only for following Jesus in the last years of his life. She becomes very important in the crucifixion and resurrection.
To be honest, I don’t see any kind of relationship in the musical. She loves him so much, she has some feelings for him, but she doesn’t know exactly what’s going on. It’s very explicit with ‘I Don’t Know How To Love Him’, but that’s all. Probably for Jesus she is only a friend, like Simon the Zealote.
But she is important; she stays with him until the end, until Jesus dies crucified. And she dreams, she loves and also sings. Some people consider that this love for Jesus Christ is wrong, is offensive. I only see her as a character in the show, very important for the story, very close to Jesus.
How do you see Mary Magdalene in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’?
