Alice’s Adventure In Wonderland’ is one of the most popular books in children literature. Alice is a beloved character for many reasons. I see her as an adventurous and curious girl who travels to a new and unknown land and finds lots of crazy people. She learns about becoming an adult and sees that her home wasn’t that bad. The characters, the structure and the idea have been very influential, inspiring lots of stories, I’m sure you know some.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ was published a few years later and the popular movie was produced almost 40 years later. I think that today, the film is more popular than the books. Judy Garland’s performance and songs like ‘Over The Rainbow’ helped to create an icon. Dorothy and Alice are more than characters from books, you can find their pictures in toys, adverts, mugs, notebooks, shirts…

Wonderland and Oz are different lands, created by the imagination of two writers. You know that they are not real, but lots of things are very real, inspired in reality. It’s not an ideal world because there are lots of problems like our lands. Alice and Dorothy feel like they are in a dream (or maybe a nightmare), but in my case I have some different feelings from each land. I can’t decide which one I like the most, but it’s true that they are different.

In the case of Oz, the author L. F. Baum recognised that Lewis Carroll’s story was too complex for kids. He decided to create a more organised land with characters that were easier to understand or identify. In Wonderland, there are lots of dark and strange characters. Alice meets the Mad Hatter, the Caterpillar, the Lizard, Cheshire… And it’s like most of them are kind of mediocre or nonsense. Lewis Carroll was very smart and created lots of original characters that remind you some adult people, but they live in a kind of anarchic place under the tyranny of the Queen of Hearts.

L. F. Baum decided to create a different kind of characters. Everything was beautiful, cute and easy to recognise like a Lion, a Tin Man, a Scarecrow and some Witches. The citizens of Oz live in a good kingdom, with a Wizard who helps and loves them. But of course everything is not that easy: the Wizard is just an ordinary man and there is a Wicked Witch is always annoying and hurting everyone. The land is more organised, there is a Wizard, a good Witch and two bad Witches.

Anyway, Oz and Wonderland are two different lands from two different books and stories that inspire lots of people and make them think and develop their imagination. A lot of adventures happen in those lands and the readers or the audience watching the movies or the theatrical adaptations love them and can learn so many things. Oz and Wonderland aren’t far from our home, we live there in some way.
