In ‘The Wizard of Oz’ there are lots of wonderful characters. Dorothy goes to Emerald City with three different and unforgettable guys. But finding the best actors for that roles wasn’t easy. The Lion was Bert Larh, an American actor coming from Broadway. His custom was so heavy and hot, he explained later that he was sweating a lot during the filming. Also, his colleagues adored him, because he was really funny. Sometimes, he used to improvise a few lines and the rest of the cast couldn’t stop laughing.
If you have a look at his career, you can realise that most of the time he worked in theatre. He only participated in a few movies, including ‘The Wizard of Oz’, that made him popular. He was loud and energetic, with an explosive comedy style. Probably that was bad for him, because it was difficult to find roles to play in Hollywood like that. That’s why playing an animal, like a Lion, was the best option for him.
In the film, the Lion is the only character that performs two different songs. At the first time he appears he sings ‘If I Only Had The Nerve’, when he meets Dorothy and the Scarecrow. And also, later he sings ‘If I Were The King Of The Forest’, while the group is waiting for the audience with the Wizard. His performance in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is amazing and memorable.
