Wicked’ is a musical created by Stephen Schwartz. He is an American lyricist and composer. He composed songs for musicals and films such as ‘Pippin’, ‘Godspell’, ‘Pocahontas’, ‘The Prince of Egypt’, ‘Enchanted’ or ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’. In the case of ‘Wicked’, is a great soundtrack, with lots of styles and emotions, very well tied with the story and the performances on stage. In this post I’ll make a top 5 ranking with my favourite songs from the show.

  1. Defying Gravity

Of course, this amazing song closes the Act 1 with Elphaba flying and singing up in the air. I feel powerful listening to it. It’s very similar to ‘Let It Go’ from ‘Frozen’ if we talk about the energies and feelings of the songs. In the case of ‘Defying Gravity’, without doubt, is a hit, with so many covers and becoming one of the most popular themes from the entire musical. What I enjoy the most of it is that the voice of Elphaba is growing every moment more and more, that starts very quite and at the end it’s an explosion of energy. You must check Kim’s post in his blog Caress · Possess · Music about ‘Defying Gravity’ and discover more deeply about the song.

  1. No Good Deed

At the second act, Elphaba is creating a spell to save Fiyero from the guards and he is transformed as a Scarecrow. I love this solo from Elphaba because it’s full of rage and frustration and you can feel it from the very beginning. This show is fantastic for me because there are lots of ‘diva moments’. The main actresses must keep high notes for a long time like in ‘Defying Gravity’, ‘No Good Deed’ and ‘The Wizard and I’. I like this song particularly as well because I find it dark and catchy. I always remember the performance on stage, when Elphaba appears from the underground and starts to sing.

  1. No One Mourns The Wicked

The opening of ‘Wicked’ is an apotheosis of colours, sounds and sensations. What I enjoy the most of this song is the beginning, with all the instruments playing so loud, with lot of energy, it wakes you up straight away. I love this song because at the stage appear lots of Ozians dancing and singing, it’s spectacular and wonderful. But I even love the song on it’s own, when I’m listening to the soundtrack of the show, I always find it very catchy and stagey. It’s also fantastic to watch Glinda arriving on her bubble and “celebrating” with the citizens of Oz the death of the Wicked Witch.

  1. As Long As You’re Mine

I’ve never been a fan of love songs but I honestly like this one quite a lot. Basically, I find it very catchy because they are playing with some of the melodies that you are listening during the whole show and because I like the character of Fiyero. He is a guy that changes everybody’s life in Shiz University, he looks like a good guy that everybody like. The song is beautiful and catchy, with Elphaba and Fiyero running away and loving each other on the woods.

  1. Dancing Through Life

I enjoy this song, and I liked it even more after watching the show live, because lots of things happen on the stage. I’ve always loved the songs that are performed by many people, in a chorus. In this case, lots of students from Shiz are singing and dancing at the same time as Fiyero, Glinda, Nessa, Boq and Elphaba. The choreography is fantastic, I remember everybody wearing striped clothes. I find this song more entertaining than ‘One Short Day’, for example, but both are good.

There are lots more of good songs in ‘Wicked’. I adore the sentimental part of ‘For Good’, the funny ‘Popular’ or ‘What Is This Feeling?’ and the dramatic ‘Thank Goodness’. Every song has something catchy and captivating. Which ones are your favourite? Don’t forget to comment below!
